The Calls

The Reluctant Brotherhood is a free phone call for men living with cancer. It is a conference call where we learn, talk about ideas and give each other support. We are not doctors, we are the men who are in the game for real. We are the ones who are actually living with the cancer.
This is a brotherhood you do not want to join, but if you do have cancer, you definitely want to be a part of this.
The biggest gift for you is to talk with other men and let them know they are not alone. The guys on the call are friendly survivors who are ready to make friends with men in the same boat.

Why would a guy want to be on this call?
Having cancer is a frightening and weird journey. It’s your journey and you don’t have to go it alone. This is a safe place to have strong clear conversations and to talk about sensitive issues.

Usually our calls are full of laughing because we tease each other and enjoy each others company. Humor is one way to approach the anger, fear, joy and sadness we all carry. We talk about pain, good reports, our families, death, sex, stupid things we do, money, fun things we have done, tell crappy jokes, ask for opinions, and other unusual things. We do, however, try to stay away from politics.

Although there is a fair amount of laughing, the call is tempered with deadly serious conversations. Sometimes it’s important to let off some steam in a safe place. We’ve got your back. Sometimes a good rant makes your troubles get more ‘right sized’. We are fine hearing about your anger, sadness, fear, confusion and frustration. Those conversations are rich and dark and serious. You don’t have to talk, you can simply listen if you want.

How does the call work?

  1. The moderator writes down a list of everyone who is on the call. Expect some confusion and banter at the beginning of the call while everyone gets connected and settled in.
  2. Next the moderator goes down the list and will ask if you to put on the agenda. It is fine if you want to take a pass and just listen. Feel free to speak up when you want to.
  3. Next we will go through our agenda. If there is time everyone takes a shot at answering the focus question.
  4. Towards the end the moderator will ask for ideas for the next focus question. The attitude is relaxed and friendly and it is common for men to connect outside of the call.
We shoot for hitting every item on our agenda within 90 minutes and sometimes we’ll go long.
    This call is not recorded.

Warning:
These conversations are not professional advice, we are all volunteers. You will hear stories, opinions, recommendations and ideas from regular men who are surviving cancer.

Please join us, you are not alone.

Sincerely,
John Teisberg
